Gartner just released its inaugural Magic Quadrant for AI-Augmented Software Testing Tools, naming Tricentis, Keysight, OpenText and UiPath as Leaders. Here's what the new category means for test teams choosing tools in 2026.


Gartner has published its first-ever Magic Quadrant for AI-Augmented Software Testing Tools, a milestone that formally recognises AI-driven quality engineering as its own distinct software category rather than a bolt-on feature of legacy test automation suites. The report, authored by analysts Joachim Herschmann, Sushant Singhal, Ross Power and C.A. Swan, was released on 6 October 2025 and is already reshaping how enterprise QA leaders think about vendor selection.

What Counts as "AI-Augmented" Testing?

Gartner defines AI-augmented software testing tools as tools that provide fully integrated and orchestrated capabilities to enable continuous, self-optimizing and highly autonomous testing in the software development life cycle (SDLC) through the use of AI. That includes the generation and maintenance of test scenarios, test cases, and — increasingly — self-healing scripts that adapt automatically when an application's UI or API changes.

The timing lines up with Gartner's own Software Engineering Survey for 2025, which found that generating test cases is the software development stage where most leaders and teams experience maximum time savings from using AI, with requirements gathering also identified as a fast-growing use case. In other words, the market data backs up what many QA teams have felt anecdotally for the past year: AI is now delivering measurable payback specifically in testing.

Who Made the Leaders Quadrant

As with any first-edition Magic Quadrant, the initial "Leaders" cohort is worth watching closely, since it sets the competitive benchmark for the category. Tricentis announced that it has been named a Leader in the first-ever Gartner Magic Quadrant for AI-Augmented Software Testing Tools, and highlighted that it was recognised highest for "Ability to Execute." Keysight also confirmed it had been recognized as a Leader in the 2025 Gartner Magic Quadrant for AI-Augmented Software Testing Tools, crediting its Eggplant Test platform. OpenText and UiPath were likewise named Leaders, with UiPath framing its recognition around "agentic testing" capabilities layered on top of its broader automation platform.

Beyond the Leaders quadrant, the report also placed challengers and visionaries. LambdaTest was positioned as a Challenger, with Gartner noting that it offers the LambdaTest Platform, which includes KaneAI for AI-powered test authoring and HyperExecute for test orchestration and execution. Katalon was named a Visionary, a category Gartner reserves for vendors that understand where the market is going but do not yet fully match that vision with execution at scale.

Why This Matters for Test Teams

For working testers and QA managers, this Magic Quadrant is less about vendor bragging rights and more a useful map of where the tooling market is actually heading:

  • Self-healing is table stakes now. Nearly every vendor named in the report leans on self-healing locators and AI-assisted maintenance as a core pitch, echoing the direction Playwright, Selenium, and other open-source frameworks are also moving.
  • Test generation from natural language is maturing. Tools across the quadrant increasingly let testers describe scenarios in plain English and have AI produce executable test cases, shrinking the gap between manual exploratory testing and automation.
  • Procurement conversations are changing. Enterprise buyers evaluating a testing platform in 2026 will likely be asked by their own leadership, "where does this vendor sit on the Gartner quadrant?" — making this report a de facto shortlist for RFPs.
  • Consolidation risk is real. Analysts flagged that some smaller, high-vision vendors could become acquisition targets as larger platform players race to fill out their AI testing portfolios.

The Takeaway

Whether or not your organisation uses any of the named vendors, the existence of this Magic Quadrant is itself the story: AI-augmented testing has graduated from "nice to have experiment" to a formally analysed, board-level procurement category. Test teams evaluating new tooling in the coming budget cycle should treat this report as a starting checklist — comparing self-healing, generative test-case authoring, and orchestration capabilities against what their current stack actually delivers today.
