AI Evaluation Testing Is QA's Hottest New Skill in 2026: Is Certification Keeping Up?
As teams scramble to hire testers who can evaluate LLM outputs, RAG pipelines, and agentic workflows, we look at what ISTQB's CT-AI and CT-GenAI certifications already cover and where the real skills gap remains.
If your team has posted a job listing in the last few months, there's a good chance it mentioned "AI evaluation," "evals," or "LLM output quality" somewhere in the requirements. What used to be a niche research-lab task: scoring model outputs for accuracy, safety, and hallucination rates has become a mainstream QA responsibility almost overnight. Testers are being asked to build evaluation harnesses, design adversarial prompts, and sign off on generative features before release, often with little formal training to fall back on.
Correcting the record: ISTQB already has GenAI covered
A common assumption floating around QA forums is that certification bodies haven't caught up to this shift. That's not quite right. ISTQB already runs two dedicated tracks that speak directly to this work. The older of the two, Certified Tester AI Testing (CT-AI), focuses on testing AI- and ML-based systems more broadly covering topics like model quality characteristics, test data for machine learning, and testing autonomous or self-learning components.
More recently, ISTQB added a certification built specifically for the generative AI wave. The ISTQB Certified Tester – Testing with Generative AI (CT-GenAI) certification is designed to give testers the knowledge to apply GenAI, large language models, and AI testing tools across the testing lifecycle. So the foundational syllabus content: prompt-based testing, evaluating GenAI outputs, and using AI tools inside the test process already exists as an accredited, exam-backed credential, not just informal blog advice.
So where's the actual gap?
The mismatch isn't that certification doesn't exist; it's that the pace of real-world practice is outrunning the pace of syllabus updates. Foundation-level GenAI and AI-testing certifications give testers vocabulary and baseline technique, but they weren't written with today's most pressing problems in mind:
- Agentic workflows - testing systems where an LLM plans and executes multi-step actions, not just answers a single prompt, introduces failure modes (tool-call errors, runaway loops, unsafe autonomous decisions) that foundation syllabi barely touch.
- RAG pipeline evaluation - scoring retrieval quality separately from generation quality requires metrics and tooling knowledge that sits closer to data engineering than classical test design.
- Continuous evaluation in production - most current syllabi describe evaluation as a pre-release gate, while many teams now run evals continuously against live traffic, closer to observability than traditional test execution.
What this means for QA teams right now
Teams hiring for "AI evaluation" roles shouldn't wait for a brand-new certification to appear: CT-AI and CT-GenAI are reasonable starting points for building shared vocabulary across a team. But hiring managers should treat these credentials as a floor, not a ceiling: pair them with hands-on evaluation-framework experience (building rubrics, scoring pipelines, red-teaming prompts) that no multiple-choice exam can fully substitute for yet.
Expect the certification bodies to keep iterating quickly here: GenAI-specific syllabi have already seen faster revision cycles than most other ISTQB tracks, a sign that the standards world knows it's chasing a moving target. For now, the practical advice is simple: get your team certified on the fundamentals, then invest separately in the evaluation-engineering skills that the exams haven't caught up to yet.
